KUCHING, May 11: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) is looking into securing more job opportunities for homeless people, beyond jobs like grasscutters or drain cleaners, according to its mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng.

Following the Kuching Clean Toilet Campaign certificate presentation ceremony, which took place today in the MBKS lobby, Wee was asked to comment on the issue of the homeless in Kuching.

“As more eateries open in Kuching, they will need to hire more people.

“This will create more job opportunities, especially now that the minimum wage has been raised; I don’t understand why we can’t get enough locals to work,” he said.

On the other hand, he stated that some people claim to have lost their jobs when new job opportunities have been created.

“It doesn’t make sense to employ foreign workers when there are so many people out of work.

“So I advise our Sarawakians to seize any opportunity that comes their way now that the minimum wage has been established and more job opportunities have been created,” he stated.
